Backgammon variants

BG Space has six backgammon variants and one separate table format. Below is the short version of each: what makes it different and who will like it.

Six variants and the Shvets table

Short backgammon

15 checkers, a doubling cube, gammon and backgammon. A good place to start.

Rules

Long backgammon

Start from the head, no hitting. A game about blocking.

Rules

Hyper

Three checkers each. A game takes a few minutes.

Rules

Khachapuri

The score is in checkers. Winning by one and by ten are different results.

Rules

6:1

Stricter gammon and backgammon conditions.

Rules

Tapa

Plakoto. A checker gets pinned and stays put.

Rules

Shvets table format

A queue at the table: a Boss, a Captain and a personal cube for every participant.

Where to start

If you have played backgammon at home, start with long: those are the rules of the wooden board most families keep in a cupboard. If you want the game the world plays and want your matches analysed, start with short. The doubling cube, the rating and the analyzer are all built around it.
